“Braided Memories, based on coincidences” is a photo project that seamlessly blends two different periods of life and two contrasting geographical landscapes, bringing to life the essence of a multicultural identity. Through random double exposures on analog 35mm film, this project expertly captures the connections between personal history, cultural heritage, and artistic expression.
When the images were developed, a profound insight into coincidences was revealed, mirroring the intricate threads that weave together my Norwegian and Pakistani roots. This project is a tribute to the interplay of randomness and intention, illustrating the connection between different experiences that merge to form a truly unique individual.
The first exposure reveals glimpses of Sargodha, a city in Pakistan where I lived during my formative years, from the age of nine to sixteen. Each image captures fragments of memories, from this time in my life, subtly painting a vivid picture of my connection to Pakistan.
The second exposure, documented in the spring of 2022, showcases my daily life in my hometown Tønsberg, , and Oslo, the vibrant capital where I both wrote my bachelor’s thesis and worked at the time. These images capture the modern aspects of my identity and illustrate the fusion of cultural influences that shape me today, as well as the cultural differences conveyed in this series.
The project invites viewers on a visual journey through time and place, encouraging reflection on the nuanced layers that construct our identities. The project emphasizes the beauty of embracing both heritage and modernity and the power of art in conveying complex narratives.
With this project, I aim to foster dialogue and connection among individuals who resonate with themes of cultural hybridity, nostalgia, and the universal quest for belonging. Braided Memories is a tribute to the tapestry of intricate existence and reminds us that the heart of our authenticity lies in the coincidences.
The project currently consists of a photo series of 12 images. One of the photographs has previously been exhibited at Kunsthall Oslo, where it was selected from among 180+ applicants.
In addition to that, the project is supposed to be shown at Fotografiens Hus is the spring of 2025 and is still under production.
